AI Answers Are Changing How People Find Your Site

A growing share of searches now end with an answer rather than a click. For website owners this feels like a threat, and for some kinds of pages it is. The response that works is not a trick; it is being the source the answer is built from.

Which traffic you lose

Pages that exist purely to state a fact lose the most: definitions, unit conversions, opening hours, simple how-many questions. If a page's entire value is one sentence, an assistant will deliver that sentence. Traffic to those pages was never worth much commercially anyway.

Which traffic gets better

People who click through after reading an answer have already been filtered. They want a provider, a price, a comparison, or a next step. Conversion rates on that traffic tend to be higher, which is why total sessions is now a worse metric than conversions per session.

What makes a page usable as a source

  • Direct answers near the top, in complete sentences that stand alone when quoted.
  • Clear structure: headings that state questions, short paragraphs, lists where lists are natural.
  • Specificity that cannot be generated: your prices, your service area, your process, your photos, your numbers. Generic material has infinite substitutes; yours has one.
  • Signals of who you are: named authors, credentials, a real address and phone number, dates on content.
  • Structured data for organization, products, services, FAQs, and reviews, so the facts are machine-readable.
  • Accessible HTML. Content locked behind scripts or infinite scroll is content that cannot be read by anything but a browser.

What not to do

Do not block every crawler in a panic, and do not stuff pages with question headings you do not answer. Both make you invisible without protecting anything.

The strategic point

Assistants are good at synthesizing what is already public and bad at knowing what only you know. The more your site consists of things that are true about your business specifically, the less substitutable it is. That has always been good advice; it is now load-bearing.
