Checkout Friction: Finding Where Buyers Give Up

A visitor who reaches your checkout has done everything you asked: found a product, chosen options, added to cart, clicked to pay. When that person leaves without buying, something specific stopped them, and "specific" is the key word. Checkout abandonment is never solved in general; it's solved one exact point of friction at a time.
Here's how to find yours.
Break the funnel into steps and read the drops
Set up funnel tracking with a stage for each screen: cart, contact info, shipping, payment, confirmation. Now the aggregate "70% abandon" becomes a diagnosis. A cliff between cart and contact info usually means forced account creation or surprise costs appearing. A drop at shipping means slow or pricey delivery options. A collapse at payment points to missing payment methods, card errors, or a form that fails on phones. Segment by device, because a checkout that's fine on desktop and brutal on mobile will average into a number that hides the problem.
Watch real sessions, because numbers don't show fumbling
Analytics tells you where; session recordings tell you why. Watch twenty recordings of mobile checkouts and you'll see things no report shows: thumbs missing a tiny "apply coupon" link, an address autocomplete fighting the user, an error message appearing off-screen while the buyer stares at a frozen form, someone re-typing a card number three times. It's uncomfortable viewing, your checkout's flaws, starring real customers, and it's the fastest route to an actionable fix list.
Fix in order of evidence, then re-measure
Resist redesigning everything at once. Take the single biggest drop-off, apply the most likely fix, guest checkout, express payment buttons, upfront shipping costs, inline error messages, fewer fields, and give it two weeks of data before the next change. One store's villain is the coupon field tempting buyers to leave hunting codes; another's is a ZIP validation bug. Sequential fixes tell you what worked, and checkout gains compound: a point of recovery here, two points there, and quarter over quarter your revenue climbs on identical traffic.
This is patient, measured work, which is exactly why it's what we do all day. The Awesome Website Guys optimization program instruments your funnel, watches the sessions, and ships the fixes, so the buyers who meant to buy actually do.
