How to Migrate Your Website Without Losing Google Rankings

The scariest sentence in small-business SEO is "we moved the website and traffic disappeared." It happens often enough that owners stay trapped on bad hosts and outdated platforms for years out of pure fear. The fear is understandable, but misplaced. Migrations do not kill rankings. Sloppy migrations do.
First, know which kind of move you are making
Changing hosts while keeping the same domain and URLs is low risk. Google mostly does not care where your site is physically hosted; done properly, this move is invisible to search engines and often improves speed, which helps. The risky migrations are the ones that change your URLs: a new domain, a new platform that restructures links, or a redesign that renames pages. Every URL that changes without a proper redirect is a ranking you are throwing away.
The redirect map is the whole game
Before anything moves, crawl your existing site and export every URL that gets traffic or has backlinks. Then map each old URL to its new home and implement one-to-one 301 redirects, which tell Google the page moved permanently and pass along its accumulated authority. The lazy shortcut, redirecting everything to the new homepage, is how rankings die. Preserve page titles, headings, and content as much as possible during the move, because changing the URL and the content simultaneously makes it much harder for Google to connect old to new.
Launch day and the weeks after
Migrate at a low-traffic hour with a fresh backup standing by. After the switch, test your top pages and redirects immediately, submit the updated sitemap in Google Search Console, and watch the coverage and performance reports for two to four weeks. Expect small fluctuations for a few weeks; that is normal reindexing, not disaster. What you are watching for is 404 errors piling up, which means a redirect got missed and needs patching. Keep the old hosting account alive for a month as a safety net, and hold off on other big site changes until the dust settles.
