Is Your Website Ready for Black Friday Traffic? A Stress-Test Checklist

Black Friday doesn't reward the store with the best deals. It rewards the store that stays up, loads fast, and takes payment without a hiccup while traffic triples. Every year we watch businesses pour money into ads that send shoppers to a site that buckles under the load.

The good news: you can find almost every weak point in advance. Here's the stress-test checklist we run for clients every October, and you should run it at least four weeks out so there's time to fix what you find.

Test your speed under pressure, not on a quiet Tuesday

Your site loading in two seconds with ten visitors tells you nothing about how it behaves with a thousand. Use a load-testing tool to simulate concurrent users at two to three times your best day ever. Watch server response times, not just page scores. If your hosting plan throttles you or your database queries pile up, you want to know now. Upgrading hosting or adding caching in October is easy. Doing it at 6 a.m. on Black Friday is a nightmare.

Walk the money path yourself

Open an incognito window and buy something from your own store on your phone. Add to cart, apply a discount code, check out as a guest, and pay with a real card. Time it. Every error message, confusing field, or slow step you hit, thousands of shoppers will hit too. Test your discount codes specifically, because a broken promo code on launch morning generates more angry emails than almost anything else.

Check the unglamorous stuff

  • SSL certificate: confirm it isn't expiring in November.
  • Backups: verify a recent one actually restores.
  • Inventory sync: make sure overselling can't happen.
  • Transactional emails: order confirmations must land in inboxes, not spam.
  • 404s: crawl the site and fix broken links on key pages.

None of this is exciting, which is exactly why it gets skipped, and exactly why it causes the worst failures.

If running all of this sounds like a second job, that's because it is, and it's the job we do year-round. The team at Awesome Website Guys handles load testing, speed tuning, backups, and monitoring on every website care plan, so when the Black Friday surge hits, your site just quietly does its job.
