Make Your Phone Number the Easiest Thing on the Page

We audit a lot of service business websites, and the phone number is mishandled on most of them. It is the action the best-qualified visitors want to take, and it is treated as a footer detail.

The four failures

  1. It is not tappable. A phone number rendered as an image or as plain text without a tel: link forces the visitor to memorize it and switch apps. Every phone number on a mobile page should be a link.
  2. It is only in the footer. On mobile, the footer is a long scroll away. The number belongs in the header, in the hero, and at the end of every service page.
  3. It is too small. Phone numbers are often set at the smallest size on the page. For a business where calls are the goal, that is backwards.
  4. Nobody knows if it works. Untracked calls mean you cannot tell which pages, campaigns, or channels produce them, so the phone gets no credit in any report.

Fixes, in order of effort

  • Wrap every number in a tel: link. Five minutes.
  • Add the number to the mobile header as a tappable icon or button. An hour.
  • Add a call button to the end of each service page, near where the visitor has finished reading and is deciding.
  • Set up click tracking so a tap on a phone link registers as a conversion event in your analytics. This is the difference between "the website generates leads" and "the website generated 34 calls last month, 19 of them from the emergency service page."

Say when you answer

Next to the number, put the hours you actually pick up, or "24/7 emergency line" if that is true. The uncertainty about whether anyone will answer is a real reason people do not call, and one line removes it.

Do not make people choose

Some visitors will never call and some will never fill out a form. Offer both, weight them by what your business runs on, and stop trying to funnel everyone into the channel that is convenient for you. The cheapest conversion improvement available to most service sites is a bigger, tappable phone number where the decision happens.
