Shipping and Tax Surprises at Checkout

A shopper who has picked items, entered an address, and then sees the total jump by 22% does not feel like they learned a shipping cost. They feel misled. That reaction is why unexpected extra costs top nearly every abandonment survey ever run.

Pick a model and commit

  • Free shipping, priced in. Simplest to communicate and usually the highest converting. Raise item prices to absorb it and say so plainly.
  • Free over a threshold. Effective at raising average order value, provided the threshold is visible in the cart with a "you are $12 away" prompt.
  • Flat rate. Predictable and easy to display on the product page. Works when your items are similar in size.
  • Live carrier rates. Accurate and the most damaging to conversion, because the number is unknowable until the end. Use it for heavy or freight items, not for a mixed catalog.

Show the number earlier

Whatever model you choose, the shopper should be able to learn the shipping cost before entering personal details. Put it on the product page, in the cart, and in a link in the header if it is simple enough to state in one line. Certainty earlier beats a better price later.

Tax

Rules vary by jurisdiction and your platform likely handles the calculation. What you control is the presentation: state whether prices include tax in the region you sell to, and never let tax be the surprise at the final step. For businesses selling across state or national borders, get the registration questions answered by an accountant rather than by a plugin's defaults.

Test the whole path yourself

Place a real order once a month, on your phone, with a real card, to a real address. Refund it afterwards. You will find things no report shows you: the shipping estimate that says "calculated at checkout" three screens after it could have said a number, the tax line that renders as 0.00, the confirmation email that goes to spam.

The measure that matters

Watch the drop-off rate between checkout start and the shipping step. That single number tells you whether your costs are a problem, and it moves within days of a change.
