The Four Website Numbers a Small Business Actually Needs

Most owners open their analytics, see a wall of charts, feel vaguely bad, and close it. That is a reporting failure, not a discipline failure. Here are the four numbers worth checking monthly, and what each one is for.
1. Conversions, by type
Form submissions, calls, bookings, purchases. This is the only number tied directly to revenue, and it is the one most small sites are not tracking properly. If you track nothing else, track this. A month with fewer visitors and more conversions is a good month.
2. Organic sessions to your money pages
Not total traffic, which is inflated by your own visits, bots, and one viral blog post about nothing. Filter to organic search, then to your service or product pages. That is the number that reflects whether your SEO investment is compounding.
3. Conversion rate by device
Split conversion rate into mobile and desktop. A large gap is usually a fixable experience problem: a form that is hard to complete on a phone, a phone number that is not tappable, a checkout that requires typing an address. This single split has produced more useful work for our clients than any other report.
4. Top landing pages, with their trend
Which pages people arrive on, and whether each is up or down against the prior period. This tells you what is working so you can do more of it, and what is slipping before it becomes a crisis.
Set the bar for what counts as a change
Small sites are noisy. A 15% swing on 300 sessions is weather, not climate. Compare against the same month last year where you can, and treat three months of consistent movement as a trend. Reacting to one bad week is how good pages get rewritten for no reason.
Make it a five-minute ritual
Build one saved report or emailed summary with those four numbers, first Monday of the month, before anything else lands in your inbox. The value of analytics comes almost entirely from looking regularly at a small number of things, and almost not at all from looking occasionally at everything.
