The Website Tasks You Should Never DIY as a Business Owner

We are genuinely pro-DIY around here. Business owners should feel comfortable updating their own text, swapping photos, and posting to their own blog, and any provider who makes those things scary is doing it wrong. But some website tasks belong in a different category, not because they are impossibly hard, but because the cost of getting them wrong is wildly out of proportion to the cost of delegating them.

DNS and domain changes

Your domain's DNS records route your website and your email. Edit the wrong record while following a tutorial and you can take down email for the whole company, sometimes without realizing it for days, because mail silently bounces while your inbox looks calm. Domain transfers and registrar changes carry similar risk, plus lockout periods if something goes sideways. The stakes-to-savings ratio here is terrible. This is a fifteen-minute task for a professional and a potential week-long outage for a first-timer.

Anything involving redirects or URL changes

Renaming pages, restructuring your site, or launching a redesign without proper 301 redirects quietly destroys search rankings that took years to build. The damage is invisible on launch day and devastating by month three, and recovery is slow even when handled perfectly. If URLs are changing, someone with migration experience should own the redirect map. This is the least forgiving mistake in all of website management.

Security incident response

If your site is hacked, resist the urge to start deleting suspicious files and changing settings. Improvised cleanup often leaves backdoors in place while destroying the evidence needed to find them, leading to reinfection weeks later. Proper response means isolating the site, restoring from a clean backup, identifying the entry point, and patching it, a sequence, not a scramble. Speed matters, but the right speed comes from a practiced process.

The pattern behind all three

Notice what these have in common: irreversibility. A bad blog post can be edited tomorrow; a botched DNS change, a lost ranking, or a mishandled hack cannot be easily undone. DIY where mistakes are cheap. Delegate where they are not.

The delegation part is exactly what Awesome Website Guys is for. Our care plans put DNS changes, migrations, security, and every high-stakes task in experienced hands, with unlimited support for all the everyday requests too. Keep the fun edits; hand us the dangerous ones.
