UTM Tags Done Right and Consistently

UTM parameters are the small additions to a link that tell your analytics where a visitor came from. They are the only way to distinguish your newsletter from a partner's blog post from a QR code on a flyer. They fail for one reason: everybody invents their own names.

The five parameters

  • utm_source — where specifically: newsletter, facebook, partnername, flyer.
  • utm_medium — the channel type: email, social, cpc, print, referral.
  • utm_campaign — the effort: fall-tune-up-2026.
  • utm_content — which version or placement: header-button, footer-link, variant-a.
  • utm_term — the keyword, mostly for manual paid campaigns.

Rules that prevent a mess

  1. Lowercase everything. Analytics treats Facebook and facebook as two sources, and you will spend an afternoon merging them later.
  2. Use hyphens, never spaces.
  3. Fix the medium vocabulary. Write down the five or six allowed values and do not add more. This is where the most damage happens.
  4. Never tag internal links. Tagging a link between two of your own pages restarts the session and erases the original source, which is the most common way businesses destroy their own attribution.
  5. Keep a shared spreadsheet of every tagged link. It doubles as documentation and prevents duplicates.

What to tag

Email campaigns, social posts you publish, paid ads that do not tag automatically, partner and directory links, QR codes, and links in PDFs or printed material. Anything where you would later want to ask "did that work?"

What not to tag

Organic search results, which you do not control anyway, and internal navigation. Also avoid tagging links in transactional emails like receipts, unless you genuinely intend to analyze them, since they will inflate campaign numbers with routine traffic.

Check that they survive

Some redirects strip query strings, which silently deletes your tags. Test each tagged link by clicking it and confirming the parameters are still in the address bar at the destination, then confirm the source appears in your realtime report. Two minutes of verification prevents a quarter of unattributed traffic.
