Where AI Actually Helps With a Small Business Website

We build with AI daily and we still tell clients to keep it away from certain jobs. Here is the split as we see it in 2026, based on work we ship rather than on demos.

Where it earns its keep

• First drafts of structure. Turning a vague brief into a page outline with sections, headings, and a call to action is fast, cheap, and easy to correct.
• Variations. Ten headline options, five ways to phrase a guarantee, three layouts for the same content. Choosing is easier than generating.
• Technical translation. Explaining an error message, drafting a redirect map, writing schema markup, converting a spreadsheet into structured content.
• Editing your own writing. Tightening a paragraph you wrote is far more reliable than asking for a paragraph from nothing.
• Alt text and metadata at scale. Tedious, formulaic, and easy to review.

Where it costs you

• Facts about your business. Prices, service areas, staff, guarantees, licensing. A model will produce plausible ones, and plausible is worse than blank.
• Anything legal. Privacy policies, terms, accessibility statements, and compliance language are not places for a confident guess.
• Publishing without a human read. The failure mode is not gibberish, it is competent, generic text that says nothing specific about you. That is the exact material that does not rank and does not convert.
• Long-term strategy. A model does not know that your best margin is in commercial work and your loudest customers are residential.

A working rule

Use AI for the first 70% and the last 10%: structure and drafting up front, polish and mechanical tasks at the end. Keep the middle, the part where the specific truth about your business goes in, human. The review test

Before anything AI-assisted goes live, ask one question: could a competitor publish this exact paragraph without changing a word? If yes, it is not content, it is filler, and it will perform accordingly.
