Planning Your Website Work for the Fourth Quarter

For most businesses the last quarter is either the busiest period of the year or the quietest, and both call for planning now. The mistake is arriving in October with an unranked list of ideas and no decision about what is off limits.

Decide your freeze window

Pick the dates when nothing structural changes: no theme updates, no plugin majors, no redesigns, no migrations, no checkout experiments. For retail and hospitality, that usually starts in early November and runs through the new year. Content edits and price changes continue; anything that could break a template does not. Write the dates down and tell everyone who touches the site.

Do the risky work first

Anything that must happen this year, a platform upgrade, a hosting move, a new payment method, a site redesign, should land before the freeze with weeks to spare, not days. Deploying a change and then leaving on holiday is how small problems become long ones.

Prepare for the traffic pattern you expect

  • Busy season: test how the site behaves under load, confirm your host's limits, check that caching is on, and make sure someone is on call with access.
  • Quiet season: this is the window for the improvements you cannot do when the phone is ringing. Content refreshes, speed work, accessibility fixes, a proper analytics setup.

Get the seasonal content ready early

Holiday hours on every page and profile, seasonal promotions built and scheduled rather than published live, shipping cutoff dates if you ship, and a plan for taking the seasonal material down afterwards. Sites still displaying last year's holiday banner in February are a common and avoidable embarrassment.

Write the on-call plan

Who responds if the site goes down on a holiday weekend, how they are reached, and what access they have. Most outages are short when someone competent has credentials and long when they are chasing a password at 9pm. If that person should not be you, arrange it now while there is time to hand things over properly.
