Schema Markup Worth Adding to a Small Business Site

Schema markup is a block of structured information you add to a page describing what the page is about, in a format search engines and assistants can parse without guessing. It does not directly improve rankings. It improves how your result is displayed and how reliably your facts are understood, which affects clicks.
The four types that earn their keep
- Organization or LocalBusiness, once, sitewide. Name, address, phone, hours, service area, logo, and social profiles. For local businesses this is the highest-value markup there is, because it corroborates the facts in your Google Business Profile.
- Product, on every product page for stores. Price, availability, and reviews can appear directly in results, which changes click behavior substantially.
- FAQPage, on pages with genuine question and answer content. Display treatment varies over time, but the markup keeps your answers machine-readable regardless.
- Article or BlogPosting, on posts. Author, publish date, and update date, which help establish who wrote what and when.
Also worth it, situationally
- Service for defined service offerings.
- Event if you run classes, open houses, or seasonal events.
- BreadcrumbList for sites with a real hierarchy.
- Review and AggregateRating, but only for reviews you genuinely collected, on the thing being reviewed. Misusing these is one of the faster ways to get a manual penalty.
How to add it
Most platforms have plugins or built-in settings that generate this from data you have already entered, which is preferable to hand-writing JSON on every page. Whatever you use, add it once and validate it with a structured data testing tool. Errors are common, silent, and easy to fix once you look.
The rule that keeps you safe
Markup must describe what is actually visible on the page. Marking up prices you do not display, reviews you did not receive, or FAQs that exist only in the code is the exact behavior that gets sites penalized. Describe reality and structured data is a free, durable improvement.
