Should a Non-Ecommerce Business Use Shopify?

We get asked this by businesses that sell a few products alongside their main service, or that expect to start selling soon. Shopify is a superb commerce platform. Whether it should run your whole website depends on the ratio between selling and everything else.

What Shopify does better than anything

  • Checkout. It is the best-converting checkout most small businesses will ever have access to, and it is not close.
  • Inventory, variants, discounts, taxes, and shipping rules that would take months to build elsewhere.
  • Payments, fraud handling, and compliance you do not have to think about.
  • Hosting, security, and updates included, with no maintenance burden.

Where it fights you

  • Content pages. Building a rich service page or a long-form guide is clumsy compared with a proper CMS or page builder.
  • Blogging. Functional, basic, and awkward for anything beyond a simple article.
  • Non-product structures. Locations, staff directories, case studies, and resource libraries all require workarounds or apps.
  • App costs. The gaps get filled with subscriptions, and a stack of six apps at $15 to $40 each changes the economics quickly.

A rule of thumb

If more than half your website's job is selling products online, use Shopify and accept the content limitations. If products are a sideline to a service business, keep the main site on a content-first platform and either use a Shopify buy button embedded into it, or run a small separate store on a subdomain. Splitting is not a failure; it lets each tool do what it is good at.

The migration warning

Moving an established content site onto Shopify usually means restructuring URLs, which costs rankings unless the redirect work is done carefully. If the reason for the move is "we might sell something eventually," wait until eventually arrives. If you want a second opinion on which side of that line you fall, ask us, we manage both.
