Your Google Business Profile Outworks Your Homepage

Your Google Business Profile Outworks Your Homepage

Look at where your local customers actually make contact. For service businesses in a defined area, the Google Business Profile routinely drives more calls and direction requests than the website drives form submissions. It is also free, and most profiles are half-finished.

The parts that move the needle

  • Primary category. This is the single biggest ranking factor in the local pack, and it is one dropdown. Pick the most specific category that describes your main service, then add secondary categories for the rest.
  • Services and products. List them individually with descriptions. Each entry is another thing you can match against.
  • Photos, added regularly. Recent, real photos of your work, your team, and your location. Profiles with fresh photos get more engagement, and stock photography is obvious.
  • Hours, including special hours. Holiday hours set in advance prevent the "may be closed" label that pushes customers elsewhere.
  • Q&A. You can ask and answer your own questions. Do it. The most common objection you handle on the phone belongs here.

Reviews are the compounding asset

Ask every satisfied customer, in person or by text, with a direct link to your review form. Respond to every review, positive and negative, in a couple of sentences. Responses are visible to future customers, and a calm reply to a bad review persuades more people than five glowing ones.

Connect it back to the site

Make sure the website URL on your profile points to the most relevant page, not always the homepage. For a multi-location business, each listing should point to that location's page. Keep the name, address, and phone number identical across your site, your profile, and any directory that lists you; inconsistencies dilute the signal.

Check it monthly

Profiles drift. Google adds attributes, suggests edits from users, and occasionally changes your category or hours based on third-party data. Ten minutes a month keeps a listing that is often your highest-traffic property from quietly going wrong.
